Omani Burqa
Omani Burqa In our area, the ladies about 45 years old and older usually wear the Omani "burqa" outside the home and when receiving guests inside the home. The Omani "burqa" is a stiff face veil mask that covers about half of the face. It has a strip which runs across the forehead, a thin line that runs down the nose, then a wider section which can cover from the end of the nose to the chin, more or less. It is made from a thick, leather-textured paper and has a metallic look. It ranges in color from a golden bronze (see picture at right) to a purplish black. Some young women wear what is called a "Saudi burqa." The "Saudi burqa" is a softer cloth face veil which covers the whole face with an open slit for the eyes. Girls are encouraged to dress modestly from an early age. Girls also wear a uniform to school. There are different colors for the uniforms to distinguish the level of the studies.
