Pendant necklace from Oman, this type of triangular hijab/hirz suspended by a cross bar of silver with red wooden beads is typical of Omani work. So too is the heavy braided cotton neck band with its "barrel" beads and attached Maria Therese coins.
The hirz would have been originally filled with protective verses from Holy Qur'an or other formula expressions designed to protect the wearer. With some pieces, coins are supplemented with or replaced by silver encased wolves' teeth or tiger claws.
Intricate patterns on the hirz are formed by applied strips of patterned wire. In general, Omani work, is characterized by the high quality of silver allow used.
