Omani khanjers are a beautifully crafted item and there are as many different designs are there are price ranges. The khanjer is an important part of the Omani man's traditional dress and the Omani style of khanjer is unique.

The item is normally crafted of 100% pure silver. It requires the skills of three different artisans to handle all of the details of this fine item. One skill is needed for the hand stitched belt and buckle. It is a leather base and strands of thread made of pure silver are literally stitched onto the leather belt creating for a variety of designs, all very beautiful.

The belt is used to hold the khanjer in place. It is worn around the waist and for very special occasions a special cloth is first wrapped around the waist with the khanjer and belt then placed on top. The cloth normally coordinates with the man's massar, or turbin.

The khanjer itself typically measures around 13 inches in length. This includes the khanjer itself as well as the case it is stored in. The handle of the knife is normally around 5 or 6 inches in length, with a blade made of metal measuring 7 inches long and is two inches at its widest point.

The case in which it is stored and worn on the belt in is around 8 inches long and at its widest point the khanjer measures 10 inches across from tip of khanjer to the far right silver loop.
Two additional artisans are needed for the creation of the khanjer and it's case. One person, typically a man, handles the lower portion of the case where the hand stitching is worked, again with 100% pure silver strands. And the upper portion of the case as well as the handle of the khanjer is by a third artisan.

The handle is made of a variety of things. Always adorned with pure silver, the base of the handle is often made from either genuine ivory, rhinoceros horn or sandalwood, and occasionally you will find man-made materials used, though traditionally that is not the case.
These combined efforts take anywhere from 1 to 2 months to create a beautiful khanjer.

The khanjer's price is greatly varied and depending on the quality of the handle's base, the blade material itself, the purity of the silver and, perhaps above all, the difficulty of the design stitched and crafted on the casing, these exquisite knives can cost anywhere from $45 to $4,500 in silver.

We are featuring three khanjers. Two khanjers are Saidi design. This style of khanjer was once worn exclusively by the Royal family, Al Said, but is no longer exclusive. The other design is traditional Omani design worn by all. The one is as beautiful as the next.
