Countries have been maintaining the silver standard for monetary purposes for a long time along with the gold standard. Silver is not too expensive and as such silver utensils, silver jewelry, and other decorative items made of silver are very popular among the middle class families in India and similar developing countries. Silver is also used for ornamentation of popular deities and for many industrial purposes too. Silver jewelry is very popular among the middle class people of India and the students chiefly due to their affordability.

Silver jewelry in India includes many items. Rings, pendants, chains, silver necklaces, bracelets, ear rings, bangles, and anklets are the usual silver jewelry items found in countless silver jewelry shops in India. Most of the times, the silver items are combined with some other metal or precious stones for a much more remarkable effect. Being very flexible, silver can be used to make jewelry with intricate designs, much like gold. Silver jewelry thus features as much variety as gold. Silver jewelry has some other uses too. Silver is an excellent choice for astrological rings and pendants.

Silver jewelry is found all over India. However, Delhi, Mumbai and Jaipur are the cities known for an amazing variety of silver jewelry. Hyderabad and Lucknow are also famous for intricate silver jewelry. a silver content as high as 85 per cent.
silver jewelleries, omani silver, diamond jewelleries, silver and gold jewellery, jewelleries in oman

Omani jewellery rings

MOST antique shops in the Muttrah souk have an open container with odds and ends thrown in key chains, hair ornaments, pendants and an entire selection of silver rings of different shapes and sizes.

Customers who are blue blood collectors sit and patiently sift through the semi-precious rubble to find what they are looking for. "I am leaving the country in a few days and I want to complete my collection of Omani silver," says a French collector bending over the silver bric-a-brac. In her hand she carries the photocopy of a dog-eared page from the work Omani Silver by Ruth Hawley.

"I am taking back a sample of each item of Omani jewellery and now need to find only the finger rings", she says putting her head back to work to find the missing objects, oblivious of the retail chatter round her. Countries of the Arabian Peninsula are well-known for their unique finger rings.

H R P Dickinson in his book The Arab of the Desert says that in some Middle East countries up to four rings are worn on one hand at one time. Women in Oman have done better. They used to wear a ring on each finger. Five rings on a hand — ten on both hands! In Oman, until not so long ago, rings were made in pairs.

It was the practice to give the bride a gift of ten rings — with one design for each finger. Each ring had a special name and some of them also had a purpose in addition to ultimate adornment.

There was no special wedding ring every finger was already adorned. Ruth Hawley says that it is very difficult to be precise about the name of the various pieces of silver in Oman as the name varies from place to place.

The name for a ring in the Muttrah souk may be entirely different from what it is called in the Nizwa souk. There was a deep belief that silver possessed qualities to shield the wearer from the evil eye and also had the ability to ward off disease. Both men and women have worn talisman rings for centuries.

The origins of designs found on Omani rings date back thousands of years. Some designs are difficult to trace with accuracy. It is presumed that geometric designs originated from Yemen. The Nizwa design of flowers date back to the T'ang or Liao dynasty of the 10th century, a period when Oman had trade links with China. The dome shaped cage ring was possibly of a Jewish wedding ring design.

The techniques used in the crafting of rings included chasing, engraving, piercing, filigree work and granulation. Each part of the ring had a name. The hoop of a finger ring is called the khawatim. The decorated upper part, the bezel and the encompassing band usually holding the design or stone is the collet. In addition, the rings for each finger had a different name.

Silver was melted in a crucible over a charcoal hearth. It was then rolled into sheets or rods that were then cut and shaped in a brazier. All the rings of yore were made in silver and some were treated to a gold wash.

Silver rings of different shapes and sizes. The most important ring is that worn on the index finger or fore finger known in Arabic as the al shahid. The khawatim shahadah is shaped like a large drop (sometimes stylised) but always with a pointed tip. It is important to note that this ring is known by just one name.

In Oman, until not so long ago, rings were made in pairs. It was the practice to give the bride a gift of ten rings — with one design for each finger. The ring worn on the thumb is a wide silver band called the jabiyrah. This ring is also referred to as batham, maramiy or ha'is masbuwqah.

The ring for the second finger is rounded or rhomoid and has several names — it is called mahar and also referred to endearingly as Abu Fawz or khatim abu fawz. The third finger is always adorned with a square called kanabir or khatim abu sath murabba.

The ring for the little finger, khanafir, was the only one that was embellished with a stone. This ring was usually made from a common umla (coin) and in size was smaller than the rings that adorned the other fingers.

Rings worn on the toes were simple with bosses — a round knob or stud or other protuberance. Rings for men were usually set with the fairuz — a turquoise stone.

Gold has usurped the place of silver and it is the yellow metal that is now preferred for rings and other ornaments. But there are collectors like the French aficionado at the souk who are looking only for the silver with history. She planned to display her Omani silver collection. What better peg for an after dinner story about men who gifted their women with a ring for each finger?
silver jewelleries, omani silver, diamond jewelleries, silver and gold jewellery, jewelleries in oman

Omani silver jewellery

Any person who has once seen the Bedouin jewellery of this region cannot help but become interested in its origin and history. One such person, who lived in Oman for five years, is Oytun Camcigil. Although she is an architect, trained in her homeland of Turkey, she has not practiced this profession while her husband was stationed in various countries in the Middle East. Instead she studied and collected the Omani silver jewellery and then branched out into making fine pieces of jewellery herself from both modern and ancient beads and silver pieces. Recently she showed me her collection and I learned about their origin.
The Bedouin preferred silver to gold for their jewellery, because silver was thought to have protective powers. The head of a Bedouin Family put his wealth in silver on the wrists, ankles and neck of his wife. She felt appreciated by the jewellery bestowed on her, while he had his wealth under his eye and hand if he needed it.
Omani jewellery is generally made from the finest silver by the best silversmiths. Where in other Bedouin jewellery the small cases that usually hold some Quranic verses are closed boxes, these hirz from Oman can open on hinges and are decorated with chasing and engravings, rather than with filigree and granulation. One technique that was refined in central Oman consisted of covering a piece of silver with a thin sheet of gold and then engraving it, so that the silver showed through the gold. In another technique the background silver was blackened with soot and oil or sulphur in order to show off the designs.

The coastal region of Oman has had contacts with the far corners of the world since centuries due to the sea-trade that was conducted between Oman and many other places such as Zanzibar, Yemen, Persia, Iraq, Greece, Morocco, Egypt, and India.
Some designs used in the jewellery of Rustaq, Sur and Muscat show an influence from these countries. The hoop earrings with large cylindrical beads originate from ancient Assyria, while the spiked bracelets and anklets that are made in Muttrah and Muscat hail from Africa. Hollow hoop bracelets show Persian influence. Designs in the Dhofar have much in common with Yemeni designs.
In modern days, when the contact with faraway cultures has become so much easier, places as far away as Indonesia, China and East Africa influence designs.

On the contrary, the interior of Oman was extremely isolated from the rest of the world for very long. It is therefore not surprising that the designs used on pieces of jewellery from Nizwa and Bahla are more primitive and unique than those on silver items from the coastal regions. What is surprising, however, is that these unique Omani designs are found also in Cyprus and early Roman Etruscia. They were brought there by the soldiers of the armies of Alexander the Great and his general Nearchos, who visited the region during their conquest of the Middle and Far East.

Some of the designs that are used are known throughout the Arab world and are meaningful to the owners.
A circular design indicates unity and eternity and is often used in jewellery from Sur, while a spiral denotes progress. A triangle signifies the spirit. The ubiquitous fish design is a symbol of fertility and reproduction, while various hand-shapes promise protection. The hand of Fatima, the daughter of the prophet Mohammed, (the hijab) occurs very often, sometimes with the extra decoration of a snake or an eye. Sometimes these hands have five fingers signifying the five pillars of Islam. Others are more stylised and have either 2 or 8 fingers, or have been reduced to small ovals or even diamond shaped trinkets.

Nizwa in the interior of Oman has long been famous for the work of its silver smiths. Both jewellery and the silver decorations for the scabbard of the famous curved khanjar dagger were made here. The latter is mostly decorated with geometrical and floral patterns, and ideally has 7 rings, of which 2 are meant as belt holders. The belt itself is also an intricate piece of work, made with silver thread. Nizwa is famous for its geometrical designs and for the heavy anklets (hajil) that are made here and in Rustaq.
Items from these areas rarely use set stones as decoration. This is done more often in places along the Batinah coast, and in Muscat and Muttrah. As stones both real and fake coral are used, also cornelian, turquoise and lapis lazuli as well as glass, and sometimes plastic or even bicycle light reflectors! Some jewellery uses seedpods, pieces of wood and bones, and other natural products as decorations. These pieces are generally considered to be more primitive.

Other towns also produced distinctive articles. Each had their different designs and patterns.
Rustaq is well known for its floral designs, while Muscat uses projecting knobs on its jewellery. In Sur a crescent shaped neckband is made, that bears close resemblance to necklaces worn by women of the hill tribes in Thailand and Hainan. The Arabs used to trade intensively with Hainan in the past, and one can only speculate which culture influenced the other. The crescent moon design is thought to have originated in the times when the Ottomans ruled the Middle East (1871-1913)
The Dhofar produced the "manjar", two sets of silver chains worn crosswise over both shoulders and hanging down to the hips. This design was similar to decorative chains worn by tribal women in Jordan. Its origin is likely to be very ancient, as similar designs were encountered in Byzantine and Greek archeology. Married women in the Dhofar wear caps (harm) decorated with coins and 10 cylindrical beads stitched on them. Unmarried girls can only have 6 of these beads. Dhofari anklets are wide bands of chain work decorated with bells.
Some of the jewellery combined both aesthetic beauty and practical use. Quite common were small containers for "kohl" the black pigment that was applied around the eyes to treat or prevent infections and to deflect the glare of the sun. These were often linked to small tweezers, which could be used to extract thorns from the skin.
In the Wahiba Sands tribal women had some very original pieces of jewellery. One was a necklace with a large silver disc, engraved on one side with a Quranic verse, and on the other side with a stylized figure of a djinn to ward of the evil eye. Another interesting piece was a finely woven leather helmet, shaped to the head of individual women, and adorned with silver coins. Also from the Wahiba sands hails the 'sumpf' or 'altah', a necklace of eight Maria Theresa thalers, separated by silver beads. The thalers were blackened with palm juice.
Ornaments with bells usually originate from the south (Najran) as do meshed collars (kirdan), which were inspired by the chain mail worn by the Crusaders.

Nowadays, few of the pieces that could be found in the suqs and antique shops of Oman are the genuine article. Much of the real antiques have already been scooped up by collectors. One such collection is held by the Tarek Rajab Museum in Kuwait.
But even the newly-made Omani silver pieces are wonderful. The Maria Theresa thalers that so often are used as decoration are freshly minted, with old dates, in the silver smithies in the interior of Oman. The silver used nowadays comes mainly from China.

Whether old or new, Omani silver jewellery is to be admired for the intricacy of the silver work and the originality of the designs.

silver jewelleries, omani silver, diamond jewelleries, silver and gold jewellery, jewelleries in oman

Omani Magnificent silver half moon pouch

Magnificent Silver Half-Moon Pouch: A true Yemeni antique, at least 150 yrs old. The Omani "burqa" is a stiff face veil mask that covers about half of the face. It has a strip which runs across the forehead, a thin line that runs down the nose, then a wider section which can cover from the end of the nose to the chin, more or less. It is made from a thick, leather-textured paper and has a metallic look. It ranges in color from a golden bronze (see picture at right) to a purplish black. Some young women wear what is called a "Saudi burqa." The "Saudi burqa" is a softer cloth face veil which covers the whole face with an open slit for the eyes. Girls are encouraged to dress modestly from an early age. Girls also wear a uniform to school. There are different colors for the uniforms to distinguish the level of the studies.
silver jewelleries, omani silver, diamond jewelleries, silver and gold jewellery, jewelleries in oman

Old Bedouin cones bracelet

Old Bedouin cones bracelet. Fantastic item, this was found in the Najd, but originated just East of the Tihama coast of the Red Sea, in the Sarawat Mts. of the Asir region. Tribes across this region include the Al Talid, Qahtan, Yam, Bani Mughaid, Bani Shihr, Ghamid, Zahran, Bani Saad, Bani Faham, Harith, and Bani Malik. It's been in my collection for a number of years and has been a real favorite of mine, not to mention extremely hard to get. It sits nicely (surprisingly comfortable) despite it's weight. The cones are not solid, but it's very sturdy. Age is at least 60 yrs.. It's a miracle of design, but the antithesis to filigree. I especially like things i don't have to worry about breaking. The cuff size is small enough to stay on securely and it will not twist around problematically. 60 to 80% silver
silver jewelleries, omani silver, diamond jewelleries, silver and gold jewellery, jewelleries in oman

Magnificent Silver Half-Moon Pouch

Magnificent Silver Half-Moon Pouch: A true Yemeni antique, at least 150 yrs old. The range of silver products includes household items, weapon embellishment, jewellery and articles of adornment, personal implements, horse and camel trappings, and items for ceremonial use. Silver is also among the most visual and highly valued of Oman's traditional crafts, indicating status and tribal affiliation, and affirming religious belief. Mandoos chests are the old fashioned and unique safe boxes, mainly used by women to keep their dowries in hiding all their treasured items and jewels in them all their lives (my grandmother still uses her mothers!) A classic mandoos is beautifully carved, and studded with copper, silver or gold, with brass handles. Little drawers are tucked inside, and a hinge on the outside allows you to put a lock through it and keep your valueables safe. a genuine old Omani Mandoos can cost up to RO 5,000 (US$13K) Local craftsmen can make you a cheaper version (and good quality) for around US$ 100 Even cheaper/smaller ones, can be found in local hypermarkets and souqs if you're lucky for RO 4 a piece ($11)- These aren't made of the finest wood, but still look as nice. A mandoos normally has beautiful arabic carvings around it, and sometimes flowers/stars shapes to ward off evil Depending on the quality/size between US$11-US$13,000

silver jewelleries, omani silver, diamond jewelleries, silver and gold jewellery, jewelleries in oman

Omani Ring

This ring was usually made from a common umla (coin) and in size was smaller than the rings that adorned the other fingers.Rings worn on the toes were simple with bosses — a round knob or stud or other protuberance.

What better peg for an after dinner story about men who gifted their women with a ring for each finger

silver jewelleries, omani silver, diamond jewelleries, silver and gold jewellery, jewelleries in oman

Omani silver Baby Rattle

This handsome piece of non-traditional silver is beautifully ornate and made in Oman. These traditional souq's, or markets, have for many centuries provided the shopper with a veritable treasure trove of fascinating items, and business flourishes in an atmosphere which is a far cry from modern commercial centres or luxury stores.

Most Omani souq's are situated within the ancient defences of city walls or forts. Here, traders meet not only to buy and sell their wares, but also to exchange news and views. A trip to the souq is always a feast for the senses, with pungent spice aromas filling the air, brilliantly colourful displays of fabric draped across the narrow alleyways, and animated conversations competing with the cries of vendors.

Oman's capital, Muscat, has a wonderfully cosmopolitan main souq, situated in the suburb of Muttrah. Most basic goods can be purchased here, but a must for tourists is probably a colourful example of Oman's national dress. Men wear a simple, long-sleeved, ankle-length robe, known as a dishdasha, with a long piece of material wound, turban-style, around the head. Many of these head-dresses have hand-embroidered borders and come in a wide range of colours and textures. Women wear brightly-coloured, long-sleeved robes over baggy trousers, fitting tightly at the ankle. Hems and cuffs of the women's garments are often beautifully embroidered, and heavy gold or silver jewelry is worn, too.

In Oman's interior region, at the ancient oasis of Nizwa, there is a particularly interesting souq, specializing in finely-crafted metalwork. Nizwa is famous for thick silver anklets (mostly too tight for the modern ankle) and curved Omani tribal daggers, known as khanjars. Many of these have beautiful filigree sheaths, but souvenir-hunters should beware, as it is forbidden to export the very old specimens. The price may also be prohibitive.

In the attractive small town of ::I, a 12 kilometre-long defence wall was built to enclose the town and repel invaders. The souq here is famous for its pottery and its interesting, ancient atmosphere.

The souq in the market town of Rustaq, in the western ::I region, has been little influenced by the outside world. Beautiful wooden storage chests are to be found there, many of which have decorative metalwork, crafted by sailors during their long voyages. The antique stalls also contain many examples of old weaponry, with bargains galore for enthusiasts.
In Oman's southern Dhofar region is the town of Salalah, famous for its seafood souq. The region also produces top quality frankincense, which brought immense wealth to the area around 200BC. Brightly-painted clay incense burners as well as frankincense itself can be purchased in the souq's here.

Twenty years ago, Oman was still very much part of a bygone age. The gates of Muscat were closed at dusk and did not re-open until dawn, forbidding passage during the hours of darkness. In more recent years, progressive thinking and increased wealth from oil revenues have brought Oman into the modern world. The souq's, however, remain as a tangible reminder of Oman's fascinating history.

silver jewelleries, omani silver, diamond jewelleries, silver and gold jewellery, jewelleries in oman

Omani Rosette

Omani rosette from Dhofar. Aside from being worn on the finger, they were often collected by women and strung in groups of 5 or 7 thru a braid of hair at the temples. The orange coral stone is rich and glossy and firmly set, the high grade silver is patinaed to perfection, and there is no damage to this ring, but it was well worn and loved. The concept of signing a piece of jewelry is rare in the Middle East in the early twentieth century, yet one should always examine a piece of Yemeni jewelry of that period for a characteristic daub of silver into which has been engraved or stamped the signature of the jeweler.

silver jewelleries, omani silver, diamond jewelleries, silver and gold jewellery, jewelleries in oman

Silver jewellery Middle east

These pieces are by and large jewelry for the working classes of this region. It is quite common to see Nomads or vendor women in the bazaars liberally bedecked with this type of jewelry.
It is also true that a great deal of silver jewelry of this type apparently came onto the market during the time of the partition of Pakistan from India and the separation of Palestine into Israel and what is known as the West Bank. These events coincide with the annexation of parts of Central Asia by the U.S.S.R. in the late 1940s and early 1950s.
That being said, we need to mention the design characteristics that these pieces share. Most of them are unsigned and not attributable to any certain artisan. The designs are often common in a certain region and simply are inherited and repeated over time. For this reason, a connoisseur can identify the region from which a piece most probably came.

silver jewelleries, omani silver, diamond jewelleries, silver and gold jewellery, jewelleries in oman

Syrian Ziggurats

Syrian Ziggurats: Cast in an alloy of 50% Silver and 50% copper and given a thick Fine Silver plating, these antique bracelets, extremely rare, some say come from Libya. I have always thought of them as Syrian, and i think you would be convinced too, by seeing Kalter, Arts and Crafts of Syria, p. 91. These bracelets were made in Damascus in the late 1800's by Christian silversmiths: Catholics and Armenians. They are very old even though they look contemporary. It comes complete with BABY PACIFIERS. One is a glass nub, the other is a piece of bone which has been chewed down some!! Great patina, no damage. The black glass beads are for fertility, and the red glass beads "for life force" are strictly what you find in Arabia, quite old, and definitely not the more common "Sherpa coral." I had to clarify that-- there is a difference!! 21 inches of beads, anything more would have been too much. Pic . Not only does it help to keep the larger scarf in place but it decorates the forehead and helps to hold other pieces of gold in place by serving as an anchor for the piece which drapes across the forehead. This triangular shaped, satin scarf measures approximately 28 inches across. Choose from either the camel, khanjer (knife can be pulled out of its holder and is attached by a chain) or Arab coffee pot (loop your chain through the coffee pot's handle for wearing.) These charms are made from pure silver and are not hand made. As well, they are not a "traditional" Omani item but are a wonderful item to wear or to give as a gift as these designs are not commonly found at the jewellery counters outside of the region.
silver jewelleries, omani silver, diamond jewelleries, silver and gold jewellery, jewelleries in oman

Omani silver Bracelets

About the bracelets:

Ankle or Wrist

The wrist bracelets we have featured are traditionally worn on the ankles and still can be but the modern times have now brought these beautiful bracelets up to arm's length! Very bulky but hollow, made of silver and crafted by the hand of an Omani artisan, these fantastic bracelets are hinged and held tight with a secure pin for easy placement and removal. This traditional design is not only a real eye catcher when worn but also makes a for a wonderful coffee table decoration.

The adult bracelet, shown above, for the ankle/wrist measures 4 inches across but has an inside diameter of 3 inches. The child size bracelet of the same design, click below, measures 3 1/4 inches with an inside diameter of only 2 inches. It, too, is hinged and secured with a pin. Unlike the adult bracelet, the child's bracelet typically contains some baubles inside so that when worn, a sweet jingling sound can be heard. Entertaining for the child, as well it makes for a great child monitor for mom!

Amulets

The wonderful amulets are worn on the upper part of the arm and are a traditional Omani design, hollow, made of silver and crafted by the hand of an Omani artisan. They just slip on and are pushed up above the elbow.

The price and weight difference as noted above are correct. In fact, the smaller bracelet does outweigh the larger bracelet and, therefore, costs more, though both are hollow the thickness of the metal used on the smaller bracelet is greater which is the reason for the increased weight.
The smaller amulet measures 5 inches across with an inside diameter of 3 1/2 inches. There's no exact way of knowing but based on those who have bought it, it appears that a woman of average height and proper weight could probably wear this amulet with comfort.

The larger amulet, better suited for a woman with larger upper arms, measures 5 1/2 inches across with an inside diameter of 4 inches.

We suggest a measurement of your upper arming be taken before placing your order to avoid the difficulty of exchanging for a different size.
silver jewelleries, omani silver, diamond jewelleries, silver and gold jewellery, jewelleries in oman

Omani silver coffee pot

The Omani coffee pot is yet one of another very unique designs that are a part of Oman's rich tradition. Starting with a leather base for the strap, the Omani artisan hand stitches pure silver threads onto it creating a very elaborate design. Along with the strap is a special section for the buckle which has more detailing to coordinate with the belt strap.
The strap attaches to the loops on the khanjer which are located on either side of the case. The buckle section is then attached to the belt ends to secure the belt around the man's waist. It is a very beautiful piece of silver work and a handsome tradition worn by the Omani men, young and old alike.
If you wish to purchase a belt please specify as some khanjers are sold without.
silver jewelleries, omani silver, diamond jewelleries, silver and gold jewellery, jewelleries in oman

Omani silver Khanjer

dtaeznc

Omani khanjers are a beautifully crafted item and there are as many different designs are there are price ranges. The khanjer is an important part of the Omani man's traditional dress and the Omani style of khanjer is unique.

The item is normally crafted of 100% pure silver. It requires the skills of three different artisans to handle all of the details of this fine item. One skill is needed for the hand stitched belt and buckle. It is a leather base and strands of thread made of pure silver are literally stitched onto the leather belt creating for a variety of designs, all very beautiful.

The belt is used to hold the khanjer in place. It is worn around the waist and for very special occasions a special cloth is first wrapped around the waist with the khanjer and belt then placed on top. The cloth normally coordinates with the man's massar, or turbin.

The khanjer itself typically measures around 13 inches in length. This includes the khanjer itself as well as the case it is stored in. The handle of the knife is normally around 5 or 6 inches in length, with a blade made of metal measuring 7 inches long and is two inches at its widest point.

The case in which it is stored and worn on the belt in is around 8 inches long and at its widest point the khanjer measures 10 inches across from tip of khanjer to the far right silver loop.
Two additional artisans are needed for the creation of the khanjer and it's case. One person, typically a man, handles the lower portion of the case where the hand stitching is worked, again with 100% pure silver strands. And the upper portion of the case as well as the handle of the khanjer is by a third artisan.

The handle is made of a variety of things. Always adorned with pure silver, the base of the handle is often made from either genuine ivory, rhinoceros horn or sandalwood, and occasionally you will find man-made materials used, though traditionally that is not the case.
These combined efforts take anywhere from 1 to 2 months to create a beautiful khanjer.

The khanjer's price is greatly varied and depending on the quality of the handle's base, the blade material itself, the purity of the silver and, perhaps above all, the difficulty of the design stitched and crafted on the casing, these exquisite knives can cost anywhere from $45 to $4,500 in silver.

We are featuring three khanjers. Two khanjers are Saidi design. This style of khanjer was once worn exclusively by the Royal family, Al Said, but is no longer exclusive. The other design is traditional Omani design worn by all.
